Step 1: Know the facts- you have a legal right to protection from harm in your workplace

Step 2: Document and record.  Your employer may have formal reporting tools but you can also keep your own detailed log.  Be organized, factual and avoid emotional language.

 

Step 3: Preparing to seek help- talk to someone you trust to keep your concerns confidential- retaliation is a legitimate concern so be careful about who you confide in.  A third-party from your professional association, union, or university may be a better option than a co-worker.  Remember to make a plan of action, don't get pushed into be reactive or losing your temper.  Planning who you will report the violence to and when you will report gives you some control in this difficult situation.

Step 4: Engage in self-care - you are not to blame for what is happening.
